Did you know...

...that William Perkins tutored William Ames.

William Ames tutored William Chappel.

William Chappel tutored John Milton?

I'm just sayin'.

(I owe the tutoring insight to an article by Donald K. McKim called "The Functions of Ramism in William Perkins' Theology," The Sixteenth Century Journal XVI, no. 4 (1985), p. 506;

Can you imagine the amount of ribbing Chappel got when he couldn't find a "William" to tutor?

Poor John Milton always lived with the stigma of breaking the golden "William Chain" and had to work that much harder to earn his stripes.

Gunny,

At least Milton was still in the 'William or John' club that most puritans and theologians seem to be in:)

I imagine puritan 'Baby Name Books' were very thin.

texscot,

As you may know, I will soon have the joy of naming a baby boy! I scare my wife by saying I am adopting the puritan 'slogan' name approach.

I hope our little 'Faint-not Kill-Sin' will arise and call me blessed later in life for having a name so full of biblical imagery and detail. I fear this name may limit his career choices, though. President Faint-Not Kill-Sin Bridges? Probably not.

Faint not Kill Sin. I like it. Have you considered Penalty Substituting Golgotha Dowsing Bridges?

Chris,

Yes I considered it, but we wanted a unique name. Sorry, man.
