Friday Fun: The Banbury Puritans

Bet you didn't know there was a soccer team here in the UK called the Puritans?

Let's hear it for Banbury United FC! (That's 'Football Club' for all you Americans).

Apparently the team were nicknamed 'the Puritans' because of Banbury's strong ties to the movement. Although it is situated close to Oxford, which was a stronghold of Catholicism well into the seventeenth century, the inhabitants of Banbury were known for their strong puritan sentiments. Oliver Cromwell used the town as a base of operations during his campaigns in the English Civil War.

Of course, I couldn't end without mentioning the Boston United FC Pilgrims as well ...
